"The planet is emitting nine gigatons of carbon every year, and that amount increases annually, Jason Smerdon, a climate scientists for Columbia University's Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, told ABC News (Jacobo)." It's very shocking how much carbon emissions we are emitting every year, and as we continue to keep adding to these emissions the worse the condition of the environment becomes.

Its important that we are taking action to help reduce these emissions.

According to this article by Julia Jacobo, New York is going to be carbon neutral before 2050, which means that the state will be balancing out for the carbon emissions they created ("Carbon Neutrality"). If more states and companies followed this idea of becoming carbon neutral and lowering their emissions it will help reduce these emissions and will help the environment. I hope that other states will follow this idea and hope to become carbon neutral. It would also be important if large companies that create many emissions took action to help reducing them.

The company Amazon is making efforts to reduce their carbon emissions by switching to electric transportation, and hope to have them all on the roads by 2024, and some even by 2021 (Hawkins).

"Several American banks have pledged to cut financing for coal as well, including JPMorgan and Citi, which cut lending by 62 percent and 87 percent, respectively, in that sector (Jacobo)." It is important that banks are trying to reduce coal and fossil fuel financing, because fossil fuels are a large factor of carbon dioxide emissions, which is why its time for people to switch to reneawble energy.

We need to help reduce these emissions; you can help by switching to renewable energy, electric vehicles, and helping others become aware of the amount of emissions and take action to help lower them.

  1. How does a state become carbon neutral? What actions is NY taking to make this happen?

Do you think Amazon sees this as a moral issue or do you think they are hoping they will somehow make more money by doing this?

    1. New York is taking steps to become carbon neutral by switching to wind, solar, and other renewable energy, planting trees, reinstating wetlands, encouraging electric vehicles, and eliminating oil furnaces through the “Climate and Community Protection Act”. By calculating the amount of emissions New York has contributed to, and by planting trees or other carbon storing activities to replace the greenhouse gas emissions they caused.

Amazon may be doing this to make money although it is brining attention to electric vehicles and reducing carbon emissions and will hopefully influence other companies to do the same thing.

  2. Do you know how we can get states and companies to go carbon neutral?

    1. Companies and states can become carbon neutral by getting everyone to participate and get involved in renewable energy, planting trees, electric vehicles, etc. and the other things I mentioned above. If companies can work together to change how they make their products, and not using fossil fuels, etc, than it would help them become carbon neutral.
